It was xfwm4 &&. Everything is back just the way it was!
Thank you Charlie!

Also the 'minimize', 'enlarge' and 'close' tabs on this browser window do not serve their purpose anymore, also the dock does not show when I move the mouse cursor over it when I have an application open. When I open an application the windows goes over the top system bar, etc etc. All this is a serious impairment in terms of the work I need to do.

Sure, try opening a terminal. If you can type in terminal, you can try
the commands too. We just have to add "&" to them so the terminal
doesn't have to be open for them to keep running. Since I don't know
for sure which module did not start, I will give all of them. Just try
them one at a time until it works. Then make sure you save the session,
so it will run by itself next time.

xfsettingsd &&
xfwm4 &&
xfce4-settings-helper &&
xfce4-session &&
xfdesktop4 &&
