Examine Applications Menu ->Settings -> Settings Manager
->Appearance|Panel|Window Manager|Desktop

Especially Panel. I use a hidden left side panel to hold most used app 
icons. It stays hidden until you tap the left edge of the screen with 
the mouse. I don't use desktop icons, but you should be able to drag 
them anywhere you want. I also unselected the Default Icons in the 
Desktop settings_Icons.
