UPDATE: that worked for about a week, then for some reason the pop-up came
back... Which could have been a one-time fluke. But I'll never know
because my immeadiate solution was to remove gdm, & install slim. Which
appearently still listens to to rc.d settings because:
update-rc.d -f slim remove
update-rc.d slim stop 20 2 3 4 5 .
was sufficiant to keep slim from actualy running. And as a bonus, this way
I don't need to use <alt>+<F1> to login on tty1...
