One method of trying almost any linux distribution, including Ubuntu,
without disturbing the hard drive is to use the live cd. Ubuntu has a
cd called the Desktop cd which runs without installing. Just grab the
image and burn to a cd.

Just go to http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ and click the download button.
If asked, you do want to download the desktop cd. After burning it,
restart the computer with the cd in the drive. You will be offered the
choice to install or try without installing. Yes, it will run the
Ubuntu desktop without installing. You can try everything, then install
it if you want to. It will be just a little bit slower than running
from the hard drive.
