Make a backup of the file
sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.backup
then create a new clean sources.list by starting Software Sources and
ticking the first 4 boxes on the Ubuntu Software tab. Select the Updates
tab and tick Important security updates & Recommended updates. Then click
close, you should get a box with 'The information about available software
is out-of-date', click Reload.
If no errors occur you can then run sudo apt-get upgrade and report any
error that produces.
Good Luck :-)
