Another reason to keep Thunar might be for programs that have an
option to open a folder - they might assume in an XFCE system that
Thunar will be available.

By the way, I sometimes use thunar on the command line to open a file
with its default program -
eg.
'thunar video.avi' will open your default video player
'thunar something.doc' will open your default wordprocessor
etc.
