Thanks Danny, Nils and Charlie for your help.

The problem stays unresolved with deleting the config and cache
directories.

Also, I do not want to go the "fully new install from scratch" way, as 
suggested.

So on one machine Lxde now does the work, while the other machine enjoys 
  Janty's KDE.
