I run a test server at home using Xampp for Linux. I have been using
this for about three years, and have not had any issues with it. It is
by far easier than setting up a full "lamp" install.
I don't recall any dependency issues, having installed Xampp in /opt
and using /var/www for my websites. The biggest issue was changing the
owner of /opt/lampp from root to nobody, which is needed for it to work
correctly. Since it is a self-contained webserver, I do not have the
issues of trying to protect it from the outside. It is not designed to
be used as a full Apache/PhP/etc server for those not on my home
network.
I do design a few websites and maintain several using Xampp. It makes
it very easy, and using ftp to upload the site changes after getting
working is convenient for me.
Good luck,
