[xubuntu-users] Add new resolution on Toshiba Portege

Hi,
Have installed Xubuntu on a old Toshiba Portege and all looks good, except..
cannot get the display to use all the screen.  The max resolution avaialbe
in settings -> Display is 800x600 but the screen needs 1024x768 to use the
full screen.
 
Do I need to edit the config file in /etc/x11...?
If so how can I get permisions to edit this file?  Have tried to edit but
cannot get write access to this file?
