Try using wicd.
I myself use Hardy/8.04 LTS and I found it here:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/lxde/ubuntu hardy main
(not supported repo)
I found it very useful, especially for wireless connections,
where you can set to connect manually or automatically to networks.
