Ok, if xfce4-mixer is installed then you should have the mixer plugin
available on your system.

This won't add the sound icon to the panel, but it should at least get
your sound back:

Alt+F2 will bring up the 'Run Program' dialog. Type in 'xfce4-mixer'
then hit Enter or click Run.

That will bring up a Mixer window that you can use to configure your
sound settings.
