I also use pyNeighborhood for accessing Windows/Samba file shares.  I have
it on all my PCs.
And gftp is a nice ftp client GUI - a bit like winscp in Windows.

 G'day there David & Robert,

    I use pyNeighborhood quite successfully. I also have Webmin
installed and have used it to set my Samba shares permanently so that
they connect automatically. They now appear in the 'Places' menu
whenever I start up.
