You might want to check in Synaptic that all the following are installed.  If you don't have the last 2, the spell-checking won't work, and if you don't have impress you won't be able to view PowerPoint files.

openoffice.org-core
openoffice.org-draw
openoffice.org-hyphenation
openoffice.org-impress
openoffice.org-style-human
openoffice.org-thesaurus-en-au (-au is Australia - change this to your location)
myspell-en-au (-au is Australia - change this to your location)
