Hi Alberto and Hannah!
I've been using various flavors of Linus for about 10 years, and
for my new (to me) laptop I opted for Xubuntu. As Hannah mentioned the
install process is speedy, and the resulting system is lightweight and
well-integrated.
I have had some hardware problems (mostly because the machine is
an older KDS laptop- they no longer make computers and made some
rather unwise HW decisions when they did ;) but apart from the sound
not working (possible IRQ conflict) and suspend acting funny ( ACPI
has never worked properly under any Linux distro in my experience),
the machine works great.
Two nights ago I got stupid and decided to wipe out my Xubuntu
partition and try Mandriva Power Pack as I had the DVD lying around. I
found it very unsatisfactory, the machine runs slow as molasses. Then
I tried Arch, having been told that it was simpler and easier than
Gentoo. WOW what a pain! The install took *longer* than Mandriva did,
and then I was expected to fill out all the config files by hand!?!
Jeez, I might as well go back to Slackware 3.0 and at least have a
working system...
Anyway I'm going back to Xubuntu. I kept my /home partition and
didn't delete it through all these machinations, so hopefully I can
restore most of my old settings :)
Let me know how it works for you, ok?
