This sounds like maybe these applications failed to launch due to lack of
memory. How much memory do you have?

The LiveCD does require an extra 64mb of ram to run compared to installed to
the HD. 192mb min for livecd, 128mb min for hd install.

You should fine the task manger in Applications > System.
