[xubuntu-users] No sound in Xubuntu whatsoever

An odd thing about Xubuntu that I've experienced is that it can mute the
speakers without permitting you to un-mute them.   Try running Kmix from
within Xubuntu.  See if the mute is switched on.  If it is, uncheck the box
and you should be all set.

It's worth a try.
