1. please check if passwd.pdkg-old in /etc, and diff it with passwd to
assume the account is right!
2. check the group.dpkg-old too.

OR:

1. finger your acount, be sure the result is same with that before upgrading


About firefox, I had some troubles too, maybe it will fine by bellow:

1. mv ~/.mozilla mozilla.backup
2. if firefox work properly, then import your old profile,
3. or  send help mail again  ^_^
