I just resort to updating through the cdrom due to network unreliabilility. I can see that the upgrading with internet connection is inevitable; I think I can deal with that as long as the downloading size will be less than the install cd.

I don't personally recommend upgrading from the cd-rom if the machine has had any applications installed since the original installation because you will end up with unmet dependencies which will either require a download anyways or will ultimately break things.

As far as I know, you can only do a dist-upgrade from the alternate install disk. If you are using the alternate install disk, you may still be prompted to download files, because the disk only has updates for the programs that come with the regular install, not for the programs that you installed by yourself.

Please take a look at this site for instructions on how to update via the CD (scroll to the bottom):

How to upgrade from Edgy to Feisty? I already have a Desktop CD ready.

      sudo apt-cdrom add
gksudo mousepad /etc/apt/sources.list [then replace all edgy to feisty, right?]
      sudo aptitude update
      sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

am i doing the right thing? coz i am still prompted to download a few hunderd megabytes!
