sorry...make a type mistake..
You said you inserted the 6.10 server CD - it doesn't contain the Ubuntu
desktop packages.
--> I put Ubuntu 6.10-alternate CD...

:-) but now every thing working fine.... in my weekend...I tried and every
thing configured as per my need...after some hit and trial.....here is what
I have done...

   - Install Xubuntu
   - then $sudo apt-cdrom add
   - add Ubuntu 6.10-Server edition
   - $sudo apt-get install apache2/php5/mysql-server ---> everything got
   installed...

Everything got installed...

But got few problem with Xubuntu....it hang frequently...sometime from
screensaver...and some time when I tried to open more than 4 to 5
application.....also faced problem with thunar file manager....???
