This would also be a good time to warn people about troublesome
hardware platforms. Engineers often are able to experiment until
they get their rig working but what about the non-computer-technical
end users?

For example (my own experience of this past year), it's too easy to
fall into the trap of one type of Intel graphics is equivalent to
another in terms of vendor support. The i915 kernel module and X
xserver-xorg-video-intel driver have performed well for Intel
in-house graphics. However, the gma500_gfx kernel module and X
xserver-xorg-video-modesetting driver have been used as a
one-size-fits-all solution for all of the Intel / PowerVR

There probably other hardware stories. Many of these unfortunate
experiences are addressed as time goes by but, in some cases, the
vendor has declined to provide support for Linux (E.g. Intel /
PowerVR SGX 545 graphics).
