3) Login splash</blockquote><div><br><br></div><br>I also noticed that sometimes (always?) Xfce starts up faster without a splash. However for startup times > 10s<br>it makes sense to give feedback to the user. Anyway we'll have time to test this out with and without splash during Edgy.

One needs a slow machine to feel the difference between cairo and non-cairo themes, and there may be other factors which decide how snappy a theme is. Just something to keep in mind.
