Also when you chose a theme, it might change the color of the panel, which might affect the contrast. The color of the panel can change often because people like to use different themes.  This is why the ubuntu people too are contemplating on similar solution. You can also put a drop-shadow behind the logo; that helps with the contrast but it might also obscure it.
