It's not unlikely that on upgrading you got Unity's greeter installed, it looks like this: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3NLUTmJpK54/TzrDehqALUI/AAAAAAAACKk/jI12OXKfEDY/s1600/Unity+Greeter+12.04.png
If that is the case, it's no bug, but by design. If you want Xubuntu's greeter, you have to change the "greeter-session" in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf from unity-greeter to "lightdm-gtk-greeter".
