This is a good candidate for backports.  I can't speak to the
buildability as I haven't tried it.  Please file a backport request
against the oneiric-backports project.  There is a requestbackport tool
in precise and later in ubuntu-dev-tools to assist with this.  You can
see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBackports for more information
regarding the backport process.  I'm happy to throw up a build for you
to test after the initial request is filed.
