Update:

The problem is gone with linux-image-3.2.0-22-generic too. It could be something with linux-image-3.2.0-20-generic that comes with install iso.

I've tested Xubuntu 12.04 i386 desktop with manual partitioning and found some bugs. I couldn't login to site to report them.

(...)

4. memory comsuption seems to be weird, but it is a bug I've found with some 12.04 variants. Kernel bug?

The problem I was referring is a lot of disk access trashing the system with only 600MB (- buffers/cache) of memory used (on a 1GB system). It seems to vanish with kernel version linux-image-3.2.0-22-generic-pae. Now I can open all the software available with Xubuntu by default and the system is still responsive.

I think it's a bug with the *non PAE* kernel, as it happens too with Ubuntu 12.04 beta2.

I will try changing the kernel version to non PAE on Ubuntu 12.04 and will report here.

Maybe it's a good idea to use de PAE kernel by defaut.

Thanks,
  Gustavo Rybarczyk.
