Without gnome-scrensaver we are all back 10 year ago.

I don't think you should differentiate software as xfce and non-xfce.
Theare are a lot of gnome apps that work perfect with fluxbox.

If we are not using feature rich applications that were is the
evolution?

If you insist on using xscreensaver and other application with lease
feature no one will use Xubuntu. All the tech people with old computer
are already using fluxbox as xubuntu does not do it's job on old
computers (P2 and P3).
