Ok some good news, this morning I fixed both of the above problems as
follows (plugin manager active plugins stay and File->Preferences works,
btw unless I was dreaming I am pretty sure I had the same exact problem
in the gnumeric deb package too and  it should be fixed the same way).

I downloaded the 1.7.11 source from the gnumeric website. First just did
apt-get build-dep gnumeric and then ./configure; make; sudo make
install. Same problems.

Then I noticed some dependencies were missing after ./configure (it
ignored them) and did:

sudo aptitude install libgda3-dev libpsiconv-dev libgnomedb3-dev

Recompiled and fixed! Not sure which of these actually was the problem-
maker.
