Public bug reported:
This is also in ubuntu forums:

---------
Gnumeric is defaulting saving all spreadsheets to the .gnumeric format. If I choose any other format, I cannot do a simple ctrl+s to save future differences. If I save to the gnumeric format I can do a simple ctrl+s and save. The little asterisk goes away, saying you have saved the differences.
-------------
I would like to save my spreadsheet in html or csv or any other format
than .gnumeric. So I go to file> save as and type in the name I want the
file to be i.e tax_info and choose csv for the file type. Finally, I
click save and gnumeric saves my file as tax_info.csv. Sweet, my file is
now saved.
Blah, blah, blah, more tax info put in my spreadsheet. Let's save our
work. Ok Ctrl+s.
Select a file. Wtf! I already saved my file as tax_info.csv Why should I
have to select it again. Can gnumeric not remember that this is the same
spreadsheet and that I have already saved it and I would like to save my
work again? I guess not.
