Including a splash screen

we've had a custom mice engine for dapper and edgy, it loooked pretty 
good I think (a running mouse in the xubuntu wheel) but it increased 
session booot time and was a maintenance burden, so took it out for feisty.
Do you experience long desktop startup times that a splash is required?
