Some good labelling system so we know it is xubuntu-gutsy-alternate rather than ubuntu

No, the filename doesn't change the md5sum. You can easily test by yourself:
% echo test > a.txt
% md5sum a.txt
d8e8fca2dc0f896fd7cb4cb0031ba249  a.txt
% mv a.txt b.txt
% md5sum b.txt
d8e8fca2dc0f896fd7cb4cb0031ba249  b.txt
