It is a good thing to have contrast in the logo. Lighter text, darker
logo, otherwise it would be to monotonous.

The vertical panel wont be the default, it is just my personal
preference that is why you see it that way in the screenshots.

 By the way, some time ago, just for personal curiosity, I put up a
survey to the ubuntu art forum regarding xubuntu's panel layout. You
can look at the result here.

It turned out that the majority of users prefers the traditional
layout as opposed to the gnome style. What do you think?
