System Tools tell me "The configuration could not be loaded..."

Try adding yourself to the root group see if it works.
Alternately add gksu in the Exec line of the desktop files installed by 
xubuntu-system-tools.

In edgy-updates (after edgy released) system-config-backends and 
gnome-system-tools have been changed to not allow admin group members 
launch the tools w/o giving a password. At least gnome-system-tools 
change seems to be in edgy-proposed still, not in updates so I am not 
sure what the status is. Since xubuntu-system-tools is still built from 
a separate source package than gnome-system-tools although they use the 
same upstream tarball x-s-t needs the patch to work with the newer 
system-tools-backends.
