where I posted the following under the thumbnails:

If any of you would like to have icons on the desktop, right-click on
the desktop, making sure that in Settings > Desktop Preferences >
Behavior the "Show desktop menu on right click" option is unchecked.
Then right click on the desktop and choose "Create Launcher"... It's as
easy as that. You can then recheck "Show desktop menu on right click" if
you want the handy root menu to show up on right-clicks.

Also, if you want transparency in the icon labels, add the following to
your "~.gtkrc-2.0" file if you have one. If not, create one. Don't
forget the dot:
==============================
================
style "xfdesktop-icon-view" {
XfdesktopIconView::label-alpha = 0

base[NORMAL] = "#00ff00"
base[SELECTED] = "#5050ff"
base[ACTIVE] = "#0000ff"

fg[NORMAL] = "#ff0000"
fg[SELECTED] = "#ff0000"
fg[ACTIVE] = "#ff0000"
}
widget_class "*XfdesktopIconView*" style "xfdesktop-icon-view"
