apt-get autoremove in edgy

This doesn't seem new to me. As someone who came over from using straight
Ubuntu, if I tried to remove something like evolution, it would warn that it
would also remove ubuntu-desktop. I think this is because it's because
ubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop, and kubuntu-desktop are all installed as
meta-packages (one big package containing several individual ones) . . . so
if you try to remove one portion of the meta-package, it takes the rest of
the meta-package with it. However, I'm not a developer.
Because I didn't want some of the standard xubuntu packages, I started my
xubuntu installation with just the base command-line system. From there, I
installed the xfce4 and xubuntu packages that I needed (e.g., xfce4-panel,
xfce4-session, xubuntu-usplash, etc.), but did not install the
xubuntu-desktop package. This approach works for me, but it's definitely a
more complicated way to go.
I wish I were able to do what these folks are trying to do - just installing
xubuntu-desktop and removing the apps that I don't want. It sure would make
things easier to set up.
