Then try readding it to the panel. It was killed probably but not
explicitely by you,

Can you try this in gnome and see if you have the same problem? Do you have
only one soundcard?
What does lsmod |grep snd give? This would happen if your card used the OSS
instead of the alsa drivers
or the latter did not support dmix.
You do have the mpg123 package installed and not mpg123-esd right?
