Adding a printer

There is a way to get this to work.
sudo adduser cupsys shadow
sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

Should we do this by default and risk the security hole?

Honestly we need a gui printing Client that adds a printer (or nag someone to develop one).

IMHO the XFCE printing menu is totally useless as you cannot add or delete a printer (which is what most users want !)
