I have looked at the update-manager and while gnomeui stuff can be replaced
by gtk
it depends on gconf which we may have to live with. Anyway Michael Vogt
(co-maintainer of
update manager) is working on this, he added xbuntu-desktop upgrading
support, but I
don't know about the gnome/gtk issue yet.
I think it is safe to leave this to him.

The one worth looking at is hwdb-client. I filed a bug on gnome-python2 to
have gnomecanvas
splitted out to a separate package with no patch though. That would be a big
step towards getting hwdb-client work w/o gnome deps.
