I cannot boot up any longer

Here's a rough how-to that might work. Post if you need more details:

Boot from live CD
Mount your root partition
chroot into your root partition
apt-get update and apt-get upgrade
exit the chroot
reboot

If that doesn't work, do the same again, but this time instead of the
apt-getting, do
 dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-`uname -r`
