i think you missed the 'nice user experience'-part of the official 
announcement ( "[...] providing a nice user experience even on older 
hardware")...

xubuntu is fast, but not fast *at any price*.

btw: IceWM is not an real desktop, just a window manager. if you want to 
compare it, compare it to xfwm4. and if you didn't miss any 
functionality in IceWM, you either did not look closely at Xfce or you 
did not look closely at IceWM.
