"init: Handing mounting event" and no further output

Hello,

This is a first boot of an untarred ubuntu 12.04 installation ( OS was
installed, modified and tarred up )

GRUB, kernel and fstab appear ok however upstart is stopping during the
boot process on "init: Handing mounting event" with verbosity turned on
though I am unable to determine which mounting event it is referring to in
/etc/init

Any advice / thoughts would be welcome.
