disable a service?

I know this isn't strictly dev related, but I'm attempting to find out how
to disable a service.

I read some stuff here:
http://upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/#job-with-stop-on-but-no-start-on

That seems to suggest that by omitting the 'start on' directive you end up
with a service that can only be started manually.

That works.

As does removing the conf file from /etc/init/

However, I don't want to permanently mangle the init scripts on my system; I
just want the ability to selectively turn them on or off.

What is the suggested way of achieving this?

cheers,
Doug.
