There were other approaches to and tools around to ease the sysadmin's
job. I don't think I agree that in 90's "multilog was just better".
DJB's stuff didn't fit in as well as alternatives, so going his way
wasn't that popular. I actually rejected qmail when evaluating MTA's,
I think because of logging issues so probably multilog although the
details are fuzzy now. Of course there were licensing issues to, not
just technical reasons that made DJB's stuff tougher for OS
distributors.
If an init(8) replacement, monolithically expects to replace a number
of other packages, similar consideratons may limit it's acceptance.
