Public bug reported:

I've duped bug #896695 to bug #792146, but the duplicate bug has the
patch I want to upload.

If I use sponsor-patch -e 896695 and edit the changelog's LP closer,
sponsor-patch complains

  sponsor-patch: Error: Launchpad bug #896695 is not closed by new version.
  Do you want to resolve this issue manually [Y|n]? 

but gives me no option to continue anyway.
