Thank you, Stefano for having a look.  I reran the command without sudo
but it failed the same.  My pbuilderrc looks innocent enough, I think.

$ grep -v '^#' /etc/pbuilderrc ~/.pbuilderrc
/etc/pbuilderrc:MIRRORSITE=http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/
/etc/pbuilderrc:export http_proxy=http://localhost:3142
/etc/pbuilderrc:DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="parallel=2"
/home/rolf/.pbuilderrc:APTCACHE=""

Nobuto, can you please post your findings here as well?  You were unable
to create a sid environment as well, weren't you?

Stefano, do you have an idea what needs looking into?
