In order to ensure this isn't a hardware deficiency, can you try with an alternative DVD playback application temporarily?
Here's some options:

* VLC
* Xine

If you can verify that playback works properly there, we can try to get
this bug forwarded upstream, but we'll also need a few more details:

* Mythfrontend log output
* apt-cache policy mythtv-frontend (To determine the EXACT build you are running on)
* What graphics card you are using and what drivers are in use for it
