I have found another possible cause of this happening (hang at the
splash screen)...

When a crash-recovery fails, (for example if one of the temporary fx.dv
files is missing) it tries again endlessly.  (the 2> output shows
endless repeat of the same error message: failed to load 002.fx.dv,
something like that)

I have found a workaround:

before restarting again, I deleted all the fx.dv files in ~, and the
.xml files in ~/.kino-history, and the program started normally with a
blank project.
