Try this,

Starting from Ubuntu 9.10: GRUB2 is shipped as the default bootloader
instead of GRUB. The file '/boot/grub/menu.lst' no longer exists, and
its replacement '/boot/grub/grub.cfg' should NOT be edited manually.
In Ubuntu 9.10, file system type has been changed from ext3 to ext4.
The kernel configuration will add these configuration all;
CONFIG_EXT4_FS, CONFIG_EXT4_FS_XATTR, CONFIG_EXT4_FS_POSIX_ACL,
CONFIG_EXT4_FS_SECURITY, and CONFIG_EXT4_DEBUG.

Finish the compilation steps listed above ("make", "make
modules_install", "make install", and "mkinitramfs"), then open the
file '/etc/default/grub' and make the following changes:
	#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT = 0 ###this line is commented out###
	GRUB_TIMEOUT = 30 (or whatever value you prefer)
	GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="" ###deleted "quiet splash"###
	GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768
This is required only once per OS installation

Save the file and run
	$update-grub
