I found this in Ubuntuzilla today:

Java plugin not showing up (on Ubuntu Karmic)

If the Java plugin is not showing up, this is due to a bug in sun-java6-plugin package on Ubuntu Karmic. To fix this, run the following command (copy and paste the entire line into a terminal, and press enter):
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so mozilla-javaplugin.so /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so 50

This will place the appropriate link to the java plugin into
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.

Restart your browser to detect the plugin.

This does take care of the issue, but........................
While Java now works in Firefox 3.6.1pre and also the 3.6 from the Ubuntuzilla repository, as soon as I scroll down on any of the pages in this site:
http://www.cbur-ruralproperty.com
small to large white blocks appear. This never happened before my initial post that Java wasn't working. It worked very well in all versions of 3.0 and 3.5. No white blocks at all. I would assume it is a Firefox 3.6 issue. I am the webmaster of this site, so I am very aware of how it looks and if something changes in how it displays.
