The dpkg terminal log just after "Byte-compiling add-on packages, please
wait ..." would have been useful.  Typically it will tell you about a
temp file which contains the actually useful error messages from the
byte compilation -- comment #2 has a typical example.

It is somewhat unlikely that your problem is identical to the reporter's
-- although the symptoms may be identical, a bug in any Emacs add-on
package will cause the same symptom, and you could have different add-on
packages with bugs in them.
