After some more investigation it turns out, that apparently this is due
to an unfortunate selection of (unaltered) default settings.

In the KDE4 system panel printing settings, the color Mode is set to
follow the "Print out Mode", which renders any color selection in the
Options >> pane of the KDE4 print dialog useless.

Setting the default color mode to either Greyscale or Color _allows_ to
set the per-print color mode in the Options >> Options, Color Mode pane.

This behaviour may be entirely dependend on the printer PPD, color
printers which do not have "print out modes" (actually an arangement of
pre-defined default settings) may not be affected by this behaviour.

My suggestions is to set the default value for the color setting of color-printers
 - which have Print out Modes
 - which affect the color
NOT to follow "Print out Mode" but to Color.

By doing so, the user can set per-print modes in Options >> which is
much more obvious than setting them in Properties.
